Calvin Ike named as DHS teacher of the year

He is a husband and a father of three children - one boy and two girls, ages 18, 11, and nine. In his spare time, he likes to exercise, watch movies both at home and in the theater, and spend time with his family.
Being nominated was a nice surprise for Ike. He is usually a quiet person, and for his talents to be recognized without him having to “put them out there,” gives him a humble feeling.
As far as DHS organizations go, Ike has been the head volleyball coach for the last 12 years. He also helps with school events, stays late to help students who are having trouble, and is a TLC tutor. Coach Ike’s organizations outside of school include the Monsanto Community Advisory Panel, which meets every other month to discuss Monsanto’s community relations.
Coach Ike stated, “I enjoy my job, and in my 13 plus years of teaching, I have never felt like not coming to work.” He considers his greatest strength his ability to work with a variety of people. Ike said, “I am a team player; I believe in helping people and I get along with people.”
His career goals include becoming a National Board Certified teacher in Business Education and becoming a school administrator. Coach Ike stated that his favorite reading material would have to be any book by Martin Luther King because he “uses symbolism so well.” His favorite movie is Pulp Fiction and his favorite television show is The Sopranos.
When asked if he has any advice for students on how to succeed professionally, he responded, “Don’t look for the easy way out or a quick fix - unless you win the lottery.”

Dr. Rodney Lafon boiled down his decision to announce his retirement last month to a simple factor. With 40 years accumulated in the school system he had come to a point in his career where he would make nearly the same yearly salary as a retiree as if he chose to continue working.
