St. Charles Parish residents will be able to visit one spot for most of their health care needs when a $15.5 million medical complex is completed in Destrehan next May.

The 72,000-square-foot-complex will consist of 10 offices that will offer services including primary care, urology, gastroenterology, neurology, ophthalmology and internal medicine. The center, called Plantation View due to its location near Destrehan Plantation, will also offer treatment for infectious diseases and orthopedic care.

The office sizes range from 1,000 square feet to 6,000 square feet.

The complex is being constructed by St. Charles Parish Hospital using a bank loan that includes state and federal new markets tax credits. The hospital also contributed $1.2 million to fund the project and the land for the building was donated by British Petroleum.

Half of the offices will be leased to private physicians and the other half will be used by physicians currently employed by St. Charles Parish Hospital, Federico Martinez, hospital CEO, said.

The hospital has reserved a couple of suites that will be used to recruit physicians to the hospital, but all other office lease agreements will be filled by the time the facility opens.

Martinez credited the building’s River Road location that offers easy access to the Hale Boggs Bridge and I-310, as well as the center’s aesthetic design, with helping the hospital quickly fill the offices.

In addition to the specialty treatments offered at the site, the building will house the first urgent care center on the parish’s East Bank. Martinez said an urgent care center was identified as a need during market research of area residents.

“There are currently no urgent care centers located on the East Bank of St. Charles Parish. Urgent care offers an alternative to going to the hospital emergency room,” Martinez said.

Millennium Healthcare Management, who currently owns Luling Urgent Care near Wal-Mart, will also run the East Bank facility. The center offers treatment for abscesses, allergies, infections, simple fractures and many other illnesses.

Millennium Healthcare Management runs several urgent care facilities throughout Louisiana and Mississippi, including centers in New Orleans, Metairie and Kenner.
