Two-party system needs repair
It is a shame that this has to happen in a country that is noted for its competence because our politicians are so uncompromising that they cannot give in a little while they reach a satisfactory agreement.
The Republicans earlier agreed to provide the money needed to keep all federal government activities going except Obamacare, which they oppose, and therein lies the problem. The Democrats voted not to provide any money for the government unless Obamacare were included.
Of course, at present, Obamacare is the law of the land. Democrats claim they have the right to keep it in place.
Right or wrong, people in their right minds should be able to give and take a bit when differences occur. We elect supposedly intelligent and fair minded people to the Legislature who can be able to get together and run the country whether they get all of their desires satisfied or not.
A political system is not supposed to be a system whereby two parties have to oppose each other until death do they depart. It needs to be a system where meaningful people who have different preferences can get together and come up with the best solution that can satisfy both of their preferences as well as possible.
The current scrape between the two parties is not new, of course. It has happened before but it should teach us a lesson that we do not benefit when it occurs.
We need to choose what the majority prefers, and if that doesn’t work, then switch to one that does. By so doing, we can live happily ever after.
