Ask Nattie
Nattie Swan is St. Charles Parish’s best new advice columnist for kids and their parents. Let her help you. Send questions to editor@heraldguide.com.
Dear Nattie: Everybody in school liked me until I decided to get in good with a teacher by giving her a DVD I knew she wanted and telling her about another kid who was saying bad things about her outside of class.
Ever since everyone found out I tattled, they’ve been giving me the silent treatment. Nobody will hang out with me. Nobody will talk to me. How can I get them to forgive me? - Shunned in Paradis
Dear Shunned: You told on one of your friends and that's not right. To make matters worse (from a kid's point of view), you blabbed to a teacher. It's obvious that you've lost the trust of your friends. It's also obvious that to get back on good terms with them, you have to earn back that trust. How can you do that? By being reliable and trustworthy until they forgive you.
I’ve got a crush on a guy who doesn’t know I existNattie: I really, really, really, really, really want to date the star on our basketball team at school, but he doesn't even know I exist. Well, he knows me and we speak in the halls.
But it seems like every girl around is chasing him and I don't know how to get his attention without looking like I'm cheap - and I'm not. Just so you'll know, he's not dating any particular girl at the moment. Any advice? - Lonely in Paradis
Dear Lonely: Instead of worrying about him, worry about yourself. Guys like girls with self confidence. If you want him to notice you, go to his basketball games and cheer him on. You can also drop a hint that is just forward enough for him to realize it is a hint. Try something like, "Do you want to hang out this weekend?"
