Isom throws four touchdowns in blowout over Helen Cox
Donovan Isom threw four touchdowns with 196 yards passing and 41 yards rushing.
The Wildcats scored four touchdowns on the ground and four in the air while holding the Cougars to just one score in each half.
Through the air, the Wildcats were led by senior quarterback Donovan Isom who was 12 for 14 for 196 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 41 yards.
On the ground, it was a team effort spearheaded by running back Will Mathews who scored two touchdowns while rushing for 35 yards. Of the receivers, Alfred Smith led with 83 yards and two touchdowns.
Destrehan wasted no time getting on the board on their first possession. After Smith’s 20-yard kick return to lead off the game, Isom completed passes of 15 and 20 yards to wide receiver Kurk Merritt and ran for 20 yards to get the Wildcats to the Cox nine-yard line. From there, Smith finished what he started with a nine-yard touchdown run, putting Destrehan up 7-0 after the Cameron Walsh extra point.
Destrehan’s next drive took one play longer to find paydirt. Mathews and Isom led off the drive with two productive runs and then Isom took to the air. After a short pass to wide receiver Tramaine Armstrong, Isom found Smith for 15 yards and then Armstrong again for an 11-yard touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.
The rest of the first quarter found the Wildcat defense giving the offense gifts of very good field position. Defensive back Talvin Michael and defensive lineman Matt Gunter both recovered fumbles inside Cougar territory before the first quarter ended. Both turnovers resulted in Wildcat touchdowns.
The first was a dramatic 44-yard catch and run from Isom to Smith while the second was an 11-yard completion to Armstrong. The snap was botched on the ensuing extra point attempt, so Destrehan led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter found Cox shooting themselves in the foot again as an errant punt rolled backwards and gave Destrehan incredible field position at the Cougar one-yard line. Two plays later, Mathews barreled up the middle and scored.
The Wildcat defense then stepped up again on the Cougars’ next drive with defensive lineman Glen Logan breaking through the line twice to record a sack and a tackle for a loss on fourth down to give the Wildcats the ball at the Cougar 37.
Then after two short passes to wide receiver John Williams, Isom hit Smith in the endzone for a 24-yard touchdown, to bring the score to 41-0.
Cox finally found a rhythm on their next possession, driving down 75 yards to score their first points of the game.
But Destrehan would respond with points of their own as the ground game pounded out 58 yards, culminating in a 13-yard touchdown run by Mathews to put the Wildcats up 48-6 at the half.
At the start of the second half, the Cougars sprung to life, driving down 80 yards, ending up with quarterback Dion Ray scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run. However, Ray was injured after a bad snap on the extra point attempt and did not return to the game. The Cougars never threatened again.
The Wildcats’ final score began on a fumble recovery by defensive lineman Paul Songy at the Cox 27-yard line. After a seven-yard run by running back Ja’RionNarcisse, quarterback Rashaud Joseph took the ball in himself on a 20-yard touchdown scamper. After the extra point, the Wildcats locked in the final score at 55-12.
The win gives the Wildcats their second victory to start the season at 2-0.
