The Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts recently invited and initiated Ross along with 11 other new members into the statewide Spanish honor society.
The Sociedad was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953 for the students of North American secondary schools and its purpose is to recognize high achievement in Spanish and/or Portuguese by students and to promote continuity of interest in Hispanic and/or Luso-Brazilian studies.
Membership is by invitation only to students who are actively enrolled in a Spanish class and have had three semesters of Spanish language completed with an 88 percent average or higher. Students must have participated in the National Spanish Exam, have earned C’s or above in their classes at LSMSA and must exhibit academic integrity and character.
The society will work on three projects during the 2012-13 school year including a Toys for Christmas drive, where members will collect toys for needy children during the Christmas season and give to local churches. In addition, the group will publish a newsletter and participate in a pen pal project where they write to students from different Hispanic countries.
This spring, the society will participate in the annual Southeastern Louisiana University Foreign Language Festival held in Hammond.
For more information on the society or LSMSA, call (800) 259-3173 or visit www.lsmsa.edu.
