Obama wins re-election

Local voters limit school board terms to 3

President Barack Obama won more than 300 electoral votes and defeated Gov. Mitt Romney by more than two million total votes to win re-election on Tuesday.

While Obama won an overwhelming victory overall in the electoral college, he and Romney both received 49 percent of the popular vote. In St. Charles parish Obama received only 35 percent of the popular vote. Nearly 16,000 voters chose Romney on their ballots, while 8,894 picked Obama.

Local voters also decided to limit St. Charles Parish School Board members to three terms. Before the vote school board members had no term limits and could hold their seats indefinitely if they were re-elected every four years. The new term limits for School Board members will begin in 2014.

As for the parish’s congressional representatives, Cedric Richmond (D) won 55.15 percent of the vote for U.S. Representative in the 2nd Congressional District, while William "Bill" Cassidy won the U.S. Representative 6th Congressional District seat with 79.40 percent of the vote.
