Hahnville destroys John Ehret
Hahnville destroys John Ehret
Freshman defensive back Dwaine Thomas being tackled after intercepting a pass.
“Do we want to share this with anyone?!” Valdin shouted.
“No!” his team yelled back at him.
Valdin was referring to the district title and their next game against in-parish rival and final district opponent Destrehan High School. If the Tigers beat the Wildcats they will go undefeated in the district, winning the district title outright. Should they lose they could be co-champions sharing it with another district team. Their lopsided victory against John Ehret was a stepping stone on the path toward keeping the district locked up for themselves.
The Hahnville Tigers (4-4, 4-0) beat John Ehret (0-8, 0-4) in their best showing of the year by a score of 49-6.
On the night the Tigers racked up 42 unanswered points in the first half alone.
The game got off to a bad start when quarterback Easton Melancon was sacked on the first play, however, he rebounded quickly completing a pass to wide receiver Rickey Preston who scored the first touchdown of the game on the next play when he picked up a fumble by tailback Sergio Medina in the end zone.
The Patriots came back with a couple of first down runs, but were unable to sustain the drive when Hahnville’s defense picked up a tackle for loss forcing John Ehret to punt.
Hahnville scored on their second drive as well with a breakaway 52 yard run by Medina.
John Ehret only got worse on their next series when a fumble was returned 23 yards to the Patriot’s seven-yard line by linebacker Gabe Taylor.
On the next play Melancon threw a quick strike to Preston for a touchdown.
On the next series John Ehret’s star player, quarterback Darrel Williams, was sacked and on fourth down John Ehret’s punter bobbled a bad snap before being tackled at the 25-yard line.
With a short field to begin with Melancon made it even shorter with a 21-yard pass to tight end Tyler Lamers, which was followed up by a four-yard touchdown run by Medina.
On the next series John Ehret met disaster when Williams threw an interception to freshman defensive back Dwaine Thomas. Williams was also injured on the play and sat out the rest of the game. On the same play the Patriots received the first of three 15-yard personal foul penalties on the night.
Williams, who was anticipated to be a big factor for the Patriot’s offense, left the game with -16 yards in rushing and completed one out of six passes for 13 yards and an interception.
For the remainder of the game John Ehret tailback Dante Royal switched over also performing poorly through the air with one completion for minus five yards on five attempts.
However, Royal along with Patriot tailback Jaylynn Leonard were able to put together a better an above average rushing attack finishing off the night with 247 yards on the ground between them.
After the Williams’ interception Hahnviilel took over and Melancon threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kailon Carter.
After another botched snap on a punt the Patriots’ punter was injured and the Tigers were on the verge of scoring another touchdown when fullback Cody Morales fumbled into the end zone and the Patriots recovered for a touchback.
On their next offensive drive Hahnville began putting in second team players and former starting tailback Lynn Simmons put together a good drive with a long run and finished it off with a one-yard dive into the end zone.
Hahnville’s last points of the game were scored on a 31-yard run in the third quarter by backup fullback junior Jyrus Evans who ran in a 31-yard touchdown to make the score 49-0.
John Ehret got their only points on the night against Hahnville’s second team defense when Leonard ran in a 66-yard breakaway touchdown.
Hahnville finished off the game by kneeling three consecutive times within their opponent’s ten yard line and guaranteeing their ascendance to playoffs and keeping them atop the district.
Concerning the turnaround from losing the first four straight games to winning the last four in a row Valdin credited the toughness of his players and coaches.
“I’ve got the best assistant coaches in the state,” Valdin said. “Week in and week out they prepare whether we lose or we win these guys come back every week and put everything they have into it.”
Valdin also was happy with the passing game on the night.
“You can’t win in the playoffs if you don’t have a passing game,” Valdin said. “Melancon had two touchdowns tonight so I think he is doing pretty good.”
Of the passing game Melancon said he felt Hahnville is progressing.
“It’s coming on better every game,” Melancon said. “It took a little while, but we’ve got the timing down now.”
Going into next week versus Destrehan Melancon said he hopes they can keep up the offensive momentum.
“We put it on them pretty good last year,” Melacon said. “All I can hope is that we come off like we did last year and fire off the ball.”
Though Hahnville blew out John Ehret Valdin was still nagged by the success the Patriots had in their rushing game.
“They ran the ball up on us,” Valdin said. "I’m sure Desterehan’s going to be watching this tape so we’re going to have to get better.”
Hahnville’s final game of the regular season is at Destrehan on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
