The man parked his white 90s model minivan on the I-310 southbound lane on the top of the bridge. Eyewitnesses say they saw the man in a wheelchair climbing over the railing.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, an officer attempted to talk the subject down for several minutes but was unable to do so.
The man jumped and his body was recovered quickly by river boat traffic in the area.
Police who were on the scene after the incident said he was an amputee, but did not provide further information.
The name of the jumper is currently being withheld until relatives are notified.
