Lutcher stuns Hahnville, Karr crushes Destrehan
The Tigers handled the game pretty well until the final quarter when they made costly turnovers and committed numerous penalties to keep scoring drives by Lutcher alive.†
In the first half of the game, some of the weaknesses Hahnville showed on offense last week in their 41-13 defeat to Edna Karr seemed to have gone away. The passing game was sharp as quarterback Easton Melancon threw a 30-yard touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Brandon Singleton on the first drive of the game. Lutcher muffed the ensuing kickoff which Hahnville recovered. A†few plays later Lynn Simmons rumbled into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown to give the Tigers an early 14-0 lead.†
However, Lutcher did not stay down for long. Matherne and crew capitalized on a Lynn Simmons fumble on Hahnvilleís 15 yard line when they scored on a quarterback keeper moments later to bring the score to 14-7.†
Melancon and the passing attack came right back after the Lutcher touchdown, and with the help of Simmonsís and Todge Scottís running abilities,†ended a long drive with another one-yard rushing touchdown by Simmons to make the score†21-7.†
Like he would all night, Matherne led Lutcher back by connecting on a 31-yard touchdown pass to Sully Martin to bring the score to 21-13.†
The Tigers came back from halftime with a bang when Melancon connected with sophomore wide receiver Rickey Preston for a 42-yard touchdown. Sitting on the 28-13 lead for the rest of the third quarter. the Tigersí offense appeared to begin to try to run the clock down. In addition, Hahnvilleís defense dominated Lutcher through the third and put some big hits on Matherne, who more than once was slow getting back up off the turf. Matherne was sacked numerous times and Lutcher was not able to produce much on offense.†
Starting in the fourth quarter, what looked like a hopeless attempt at a comeback by Lutcher picked up steam when Matherne scored on a weaving 48-yard quarterback draw to bring the score to 28-19 after a two-point conversion failed.†
On the subsequent drive by Hahnville,† Simmons ran for a gain and fumbled out of bounds. On the next play Melancon completed a big pass to Preston that got the team into the red zone, but then Simmons coughed up the ball again and Lutcher took over for good. Within a few plays Matherne threw a 48-yard touchdown that was called back due to a block in the back, but still resulted in a significant gain. Matherne was sacked back-to-back and on fourth down and 15 launched a desperation throw to the end zone that ended in an incompletion, but garnered a flag for defensive pass interference. A few plays later running back Torian Shorty slid into the end zone on a seven yard rush to bring the score to 28-25 after a successful point after attempt.†
With about three minutes left in the game Lutcher was unsuccessful on an onside kick attempt recovered by Hahnville tight end Tyler Lamers. However, Hahnville's offense went three-and-out and were forced to punt.†
On Lutcherís last scoring drive of the game, Hahnville's once again was called for pass interference on a fourth down. Matherne then added another 20 yards on the ground on a quarterback draw before throwing a 15-yard touchdown to Roussel to give Lutcher the lead 32-28 after a successful two point conversion.†
With only 57 seconds to go, Preston muffed the kickoff and was only able to gain a few yards. Melancon completed a big pass and spiked the ball, but on the next play a swing pass bounced out of the hands of Simmons.†
On Hahnvilleís last offensive play of the night a bullet from Melancon bounced out the hands of Singleton and was picked off by a Lutcher defender who was stopped short of a touchdown.†
Matherne came back on the field for one more play and with 15 seconds remaining downed the ball to take the victory home for the Bulldogs.†† †
Karr blows past†Destrehan, 45-7
By Jonathan Menard†
Destrehanís lone highlight on Friday night took place on the first play from scrimmage when receiver Rickey Jefferson caught a short pass from Donovan Isom and took it 64 yards for a score.
After that, Edna Karr (2-0) scored 45 straight points to beat Destrehan (1-1) 45-7.
After Jeffersonís score, Edna Karr quarterback Devante Noil tied up the game at 7-7 with an 8-yard run. On Destrehanís next series, Karr blocked a punt and scooped it up on the 10-yard line. Kerry Taylor fired a strike to tight end Standish Dobard to give the Cougars a 14-7 advantage.
Karr extended their lead on the first play of the second quarter when speedy Jarrell Bennett took a hand off and made multiple Destrehan defenders miss on his way to a 35-yard score.
With Destrehanís offense going nowhere for the rest of the
quarter, the Wildcat defense did an admirable job of keeping Karr off the board for the next two series. However, Noil would eventually find the end zone with 3:55 left in the half on a 28-yard run to put the Cougars up 28-7.
Destrehan fumbled the ball away on their next offensive possession giving Karr the ball on the Wildcat 11-yard line. A pair of penalties pushed Karr back and the Cougars had to settle for a 35-yard field goal to go up 31-7.
But the Cougars werenít done. With just 1:26 left until the half, Ronald Johnson scooped up a blocked punt and brought it in for the score to give Karr a 38-8 halftime lead.
The Cougars would score one more touchdown in the third quarter for the final margin.
