Destrehan thumps Thibodaux, 48-14

Destrehan thumps Thibodaux, 48-14
Coming off an emotional win last week where everything seemed to go right for Destrehan, the Wildcats came out a little flat against Thibodaux. But when the Wildcats got rolling in the second quarter, there was no stopping them as they cruised to a 48-14 win Friday night.

Destrehan scored on their opening drive, which was set up by a huge kickoff return by John Williams. Wildcat running back Will Mathews moved his team into Thibodaux territory with a 24-yard run and quarterback Donovan Isom followed with a 20-yard scramble to get inside the Thibodaux 10. Isom then found Kirk Merritt on a 9-yard crossing pattern to give Destrehan a 7-0 lead.

Thibodaux answered right back on their first possession due to the play of Donta Johnson. With his team facing a 4th and 7 inside Destrehan territory, Johnson broke through defenders for a first down. Then he tossed a 15-yard pass to get his team to the Destrehan 3-yard line and ran it in for the score a play later to tie the game at 7-7.

On the ensuing possession, Wildcat return man Alfred Smith mishandled the kickoff and Thibodaux recovered at the Destrehan 12-yard line. Tiger quarterback Peyton Bonvillain eventually put it in the end zone after two consecutive carries to give his team a 14-7 lead.

It was the first time Destrehan has trailed in a game all season.

The Wildcats wasted little time tying the score. Safety Brandon Scott scooped up a short kickoff and brought the ball to the Thibodaux 34-yard line. After Destrehan failed to make much headway, Isom connected with Karon Taylor for a 20-yard gain on 4th and 10. Isom then found Tremaine Armstrong on a 4-yard pass to bring the ball to the 10-yard line as the first quarter came to an end.

On the first play of the second quarter, Mathews scored on a 10-yard run to tie the game at 14-14.

The Wildcats took over from that point on. Isom drove his team down the field with five minutes left until the half and found Mathews for an 8-yard score to put the Wildcats on top 21-14.

After the Wildcat defense held Thibodaux, Smith redeemed himself after his fumbled kickoff and returned a punt all the way to the Destrehan 30. The Wildcats moved to the 2-yard line after a nice run by Mathews, but a penalty pushed Destrehan back to their own 16. That’s when Isom connected with Smith for a 16-yard score to put Destrehan up 28-14 seconds before halftime.

Isom put the game out of reach in the third on another 8-yard touchdown pass to Mathews. Later in the quarter, Isom went long to Williams for an 81-yard score to put Destrehan up 41-14.

Mathews iced the game in the fourth after his 3-yard run gave the Wildcats a 48-14 win.
